I have to personally go back to Star Wars as the ground breaker that served as a reference for how every other movie should be. Avatar, even though some critics disagree, will go down as a trend setter that helped changed the motion picture industry. I am not saying that the 3D element will change things--although that can and already has had an effect on other movies that have since been spawned in 3D because of the Avatar success.
I am saying Avatar will be a trend setter because of it's relevance to science fiction and how it brought non-science fiction fans back to the genre. Even most sci-fi fans would have to admit watching Avatar brought back memories of Science Fiction greats in the past. Some will disagree and call Avatar a separate genre. I think it can only fall under the genre of science fiction and here is why. The theme, special effects and other worldy like atmosphere that was created by James Cameron can only be applied in this genre. While it's true Avatar did bring many non Science Fiction fans to the theatre-that still doesn't exclude Avatar from the genre by any means. Think of it as the same way that Country Music Artist Taylor Swift, whether you like her or not, has brought many pop fans to Country Music. That's the closest analogy I can make at how Avatar has not only crossed genres with its breath-taking scenery and unique plot. It's a great buy. Those looking to buy Avatar will find multiple deals on the net--but will notice there isn't a 3D version available. The prices typically range around 19 dollars for a two disc copy on Blu-Ray. That's not a high price purchase for the quality of movie you get-especially if you are like me and plan on keeping Avatar well after you buy it.
I hope it stays in my DVD case forever. It was that good.
In fact, the only problem with Avatar might concern the question of watching the movie at home. When you buy Avatar on DVD or watch it online, you won't get the same feeling watching Avatar online or at home as you did watching the 3D version in the theatre. If you want to rent Avatar and you haven't seen it yet-you will miss out on the spectacle that was the 3D adventure. Until there is a way to watch Avatar in 3D online or at home then the movie will no receive the justice it deserves from those who did not see it in the theatre. I am not saying the movie doesn't stand alone solely without 3D animation. I will say the Avatar experience is unlike any other movie or any other precedent when seen in 3D at the theatre. That's why this film is so ground breaking and revolutionary. Any sequel or prequel will not do Avatar justice. It probably will never live up to the hype that will soon accompany it. Still, Avatar will live on forever as a trend setter in the science fiction genre. My kids and their kids will watch Star Wars and the sequels. But rest assured, they will also watch Avatar online or on DVD or whateve platform exists on down the line. Hopefully, and cross our fingers on this one, someday Avatar 3D will be an experience we can share once again in the comfort of our own homes. With the addition of so many 3D movies, it seems that is a likely possibility for me and future generations. In other words, it's only a matter of time before technology at home catches up.
Then Avatar will be looked as, perhaps by then, as a start to the 3D animation that changed Science Fiction forever. I believe it's that big. Don't get me wrong. Buy Avatar anyway even if it's not in 3D. It's well worth the purchase even without the amazing effects in theatres.
